What Is a Self-Employed Travel Agent?

A self-employed travel agent works for themselves rather than being employed by a traditional travel agency.

Instead of receiving a fixed salary for working set hours, you're responsible for developing your own customer base and generating bookings.

As a Travel Wizard, you'll operate your own self-employed travel business while using the professional travel infrastructure provided by Travel Wizards.

That means you can concentrate on building relationships, finding customers and selling great holidays without having to establish every supplier relationship, booking system and operational process yourself.

You get the independence of self-employment with the support of an established travel business behind you.

Self-Employed Travel Agent vs Employed Travel Agent

It's important to understand the difference before deciding which route is right for you.

Employed Travel Agent

An employed travel agent typically works for a travel company in return for a salary. The company generally decides your working arrangements, provides the customers and controls much of how the business operates. Your income is normally based primarily on your salary, potentially with bonuses or incentives.

Self-Employed Travel Agent

As a self-employed Travel Wizard, you're building a business of your own.

  • You develop your own customer base.
  • You have much greater control over when and where you work.
  • And rather than simply receiving a salary, your earning potential is connected to the bookings and commission your business generates.

That brings greater freedom — but it also brings greater responsibility. You're not simply doing a job. You're building a business.

Why Become a Self-Employed Travel Agent?

Be Your Own Boss

For many people, this is the biggest attraction.  You're no longer simply working to build somebody else's client base. The relationships you develop with your customers can become one of the most valuable assets in your business. Look after them exceptionally well and they can return to you year after year and recommend you to friends, family and colleagues.

Choose When You Work

Self-employment gives you considerably more flexibility over your working day than most traditional travel jobs. You can organise your time around your customers, your business and your other commitments.

That doesn't mean customers only need you when it's convenient. Running a successful travel business requires responsiveness and professional service. But you have far greater control over how you organise that work.

Work From Home

You don't need the expense of opening a traditional high-street travel agency. Travel Wizards can operate remotely, allowing you to build your business from home or another suitable working environment.

Control How Much Business You Build

There isn't a predetermined number of holidays you're allowed to sell.  Perhaps you want to develop a smaller travel business around other commitments.  Perhaps your ambition is to build a substantial full-time income and a large portfolio of repeat customers. The direction and scale of the business is largely down to you.

Build Something of Your Own

Every new customer, recommendation and repeat booking can contribute towards something bigger than the original sale. You're developing your own reputation and customer relationships.  That's fundamentally different from simply processing bookings for an employer.

What Does Travel Wizards Provide?

Independence Doesn't Mean Starting Alone

You could attempt to establish a completely independent travel agency yourself, but running a professional travel business involves considerably more than creating a logo, building a website and finding holidays online.

You need:

  • To access to travel suppliers.
  • Booking technology.
  • You need ways of accepting customer payments.
  • You need appropriate processes around financial protection and compliance.
  • You need administration.
  • And when something unexpected happens with a booking, you need to know what to do.

Travel Wizards provides much of the professional infrastructure behind your business.

How Do Self-Employed Travel Agents Make Money?

Self-employed travel agents make their money from the commission or margin generated when their customers book travel.

For example, a holiday supplier may pay commission to the travel agency when a booking is made.

As a Travel Wizard, you receive an agreed share of the qualifying commission generated by your bookings.

Your Own Customers

Generate the customer yourself and you currently receive:

70% of the Qualifying Commission

That could include customers generated through your own network, recommendations, social media, marketing or existing client relationships.

Travel Wizards Leads

Where Travel Wizards generates and allocates a qualifying customer lead to you, you currently receive:

50% of the Qualifying Commission

This means you can build your own customer base while potentially benefiting from additional opportunities generated centrally.
